Amanda Lee Koe’s latest novel, Sister Snake, and Tsui Hark’s cult film Green Snake (1993) are both playful and vivid interpretations of the ancient Chinese folktale Legend of the White Snake.
Lush and sensual, Tsui Hark’s idiosyncratic 1993 cult classic centres on immortal snake spirits, Green Snake aka Xiao Qing (Maggie Cheung) and White Snake aka Bai Suzhen (Joey Wong), two serpents who transform into beautiful women to explore earthly emotions and the human realm, but are persecuted by Taoist monks who believe them to be evil creatures.
Join us on for a pre-show introduction and a post-show discussion with author Amanda Lee Koe, actress Oon Shu An and filmmaker Kirsten Tan, on how Sister Snake and Green Snake delve into themes of sisterhood, love, identity, and the tension between freedom and morality. Post-show book signing to follow.
This event is co-presented with Ethos Books.
