ABOUT

Joshua Ip (b. 1982) is a writer, editor and literary organiser. He has published six-ish volumes of poetry, edited eleven literary anthologies, and won some prizes. His latest collection of anachronistic translations of Tang Poetry, translations to the tanglish, was published in Aug 2021. He co-founded Sing Lit Station.

TEXTING THE TANG DYNASTY: THE ART OF TRANSCREATION

Description: Did Li Bai ever drunk text? Did Su Dongpo ever have a bad Zoom connection? Perhaps not, but let Joshua Ip help you explore how modern and local metaphors, from technology to COVID to Singaporean sights, can be used as ways to understand ancient Chinese poems. Learn about how a translation can be more than the original, and perhaps try out translating for yourself.
Learning Outcomes: Introduction to famous Chinese poems from the Tang and Song Dynasty in English and Chinese; introduction to the art of translation, from traditional to experimental. [Some basic knowledge of Chinese preferred, but not necessary.]

SINGAPORE POETRY 101
For: secondary, junior college; min. 5 pax
Availability: 1 - 1.5 hours per session; single session
Description: Poetry in Singapore has undergone a remarkable renaissance in the last twenty years, with collections by new writers available every few months. Joshua Ip will walk you through a potted history of poetry in Singapore, from pre-independence and nationalist writing all the way to spoken word and Sing Lit Station. Learn about the various schools / styles of writing, and have a crash course on the concerns and unique attributes of Singapore poets (to perhaps get you ready for that unseen poem...)
Learning Outcomes: Introduction to history of Singapore poetry; be familiar with styles and concerns of Singapore poets; quick analysis of prominent Singapore poems.

WORKSHOPS

THINKING INSIDE THE BOX: FORM IN POETRY
For: secondary, junior college; min. 5 pax
Availability: 2 / 3 hours per session; single session
Description: What's easier to write - a sonnet or a free verse poem? This workshop aims to introduce poetic forms as simple guides for students to try out when first learning how to write poetry, and to better understand poetry. It will also bring students on a brief journey through the history of form, and invite them to try out forms such as the haiku, ghazal, liwuli, empat perkataan, or sonnet. Students will be equipped to write and analyse various forms of poetry.
Learning Outcomes: understand the history of form; learn how to employ a variety of poetic forms; learn how to analyse poetic forms; receive feedback on their writing.
