ABOUT

A.J. Low is the husband-and-wife writing team of Adan Jimenez and Felicia Low-Jimenez. They write the best-selling Sherlock Sam series of children’s books. Their books have won the Singapore Book Awards for Best Young Persons Title 2020, the International Schools Libraries Network’s Red Dot Award 2013-2014, and the Popular Readers’ Choice Award numerous times. Sherlock Sam has been published in North America, Indonesia, Turkey, South Korea, Myanmar, China, and the Middle East, and will soon be published in Taiwan. Sherlock Sam: The Musical was staged in 2023 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the series.

During the day, Felicia is a comics publisher and Adan is a freelance writer, editor, and translator. You can reach them on Instagram at @aj_low_writers!

Description: How do you turn your love for stories into a career? Authors Adan Jimenez and Felicia Low-Jimenez will share how they started and sustained a writing career while juggling full-time jobs. They will discuss how and why they started telling stories as kids, their inspirations, how their jobs are almost always story-related, why engaging with stories from various mediums is important, and how they write as a team.

BUILDING A CAREER IN STORIES
For:
 secondary / tertiary; available for classroom sessions or assembly talks
Availability:  1 / 1.5 hours per session; single session
Description: How do you turn your love for stories into a career? Authors Adan Jimenez and Felicia Low-Jimenez will share how they started and sustained writing a long-running book series while juggling full-time jobs in the video game and comic book publishing industry. They will discuss creative collaborations, working with publishers and editors, the importance of marketing and publicity, and how to handle burn-out (as best as they can).

WORKSHOPS

DETECTIVES, DEDUCTION AND DECEIT
For: upper / lower primary; 5-30 pax.
Availability: 3 hours per session; single session
Description: The authors Adan Jimenez and Felicia Low-Jimenez will work with students on creating intriguing (or just plain devious!) characters, mysterious settings, and intricate plots for their detective stories. Session focus can be adapted for genres other than mysteries.
Learning Outcomes: how to build a believable world and  craft captivating characters; how to hone story-crafting skills applicable across multiple genres.

ROLL WITH IT: STORIES GET DICEY!
For:
 upper / lower primary; 5-25 pax.
Availability:  1.5 / 2 hours per session; single session
Description: Geek out with authors Adan Jimenez and Felicia Low-Jimenez and use dice to roll up stats RPG-style. Create characters with more sides than a die and use them to develop stories with prompts that roll your way. No previous role-playing-game (RPG) experience is required. Dice will be provided.
Learning Outcomes: how to create a multi-dimensional protagonist/antagonist for story-making; how to evoke characters through prose.
